Tomatoes in three states have been recalled due to a potentially deadly Salmonella infection, according to the Food and Drug Administration.
The FDA first announced that tomatoes from Williams Farm Repack LLC were potentially contaminated with Salmonella on May 2. The recall impacts tomatoes sold in Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina that were sold between April 23 and April 28.
This week, the FDA elevated the recall to Class I, the highest and most serious class of recall.
Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections young children, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems. Healthy people infected with the organism can have fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. Sometimes, a Salmonella infection can cause arterial infections, endocarditis and arthritis.
Anyone who bought the tomatoes are urged not to eat them and return them to the store for a refund.
